Future casting and looking at a natural progression I would agree with you that social networking is one of the bridges that will take mobile Internet out of the early adopter demographic into the mainstream (a la Geoffrey A. Moore, Crossing the Chasm)...

...to my reckoning the key thing to remember is that gratification thru internet (on Laptop) a static location is vastly different from gratification while on the move...yes the key impulses of either 'seeing' or being 'seen' will stay, the need for 'amplified connection' will the be there, the need for non intrusive live updates will be there...the key difference however is that internet products/service that will offer instant, limited yet complete gratification will rule the roost...

...on mobile SMALL is king...small screen, small bandwidth, small time frame for the user on the move...the blog grew into the microblog (twitter) on mobile... internet based social networks will need to come up with a similar compelling avatar on mobile that works both on WAP and SMS...

...to my mind a handset manufacturer could fish for social/conversation platforms (like youtube, flickr, hotklix not just limit to SN)...internet companies intending to stay ahead in the curve should work towards creating platforms that offer complete gratification at every step/click/page and the content gets amplified in and beyond the network...
