"It is a common perception that Open Mobile Ecosystem is not in operator’s favor and its adoption would result in revenue loss. But these fears are unfounded as in the long run, the operators would benefit from adoption of open mobile ecosystem. Cap Gemini estimates that a UK mobile operator with a 20 percent market share could see a net revenue uplift of 12 percent by 2001 by adopting the Open Platform strategy."

I'm not so sure about how true the 'net revenue uplift" statement would be. I still beleve that operators will find ways to add value in the delivery of the user experience, thus hanging onto key ARPU. The differentiators between the Tier 1 operators will still have to happen and while price is always a factor, the added services the operator brings will be a factor. How 'open' these are is the question - lets hope the underlying technology decisions enable this.

This strikes at the critical division between the 'mobile industry' and the 'computer industry': The industries are colliding from both extremes of the spectrum. The mobile voice & messaging industry is confronted with the need to become data services based. And the IT industry is pressured to put data access into the hands of users wherever they are.

The wireless standards are enabling of always connected 'Cloud 4G' or Cloud ICT environment that is what will drive both industries forward. This causes the clash that is occurring within NG/4G you describe as the open mobile ecosystem.

What is the potential for open mobile ecosystem developing? 100%. It is inevitable because what drives it are fundamental benefits: Increased productivity, increased level/dimension of innovation, and increased entertainment/personal value. These are the basic elements that have driven both of the separate industries to where they are today. Because the fundamentals factors that have made the individual industries attractive to users and productive for enterprises and society as a whole now are converging on a common market ecosystem, they are irrevocably driven together.

Of course, there remain regulatory limitations, corporate and group empires, and IPR pools that must be reconciled over time and in jurisdiction by jurisdiction.

The two main industries that will make up ICT are among the largest in the world and arguably the most important for the world's 'economic survival' as we face the universal challenge of how to build commerce and social functions without turning the planet into a cesspool in the process.

The 'other side of the coin' in ICT development is Cloud Computing. When you look at the IT and mobile industries simply in terms of size and scope of the requisite commerce and degree they touch the lives and livelihoods of users and organizations, these are each over $1 trillion dollar industries.

The IT industry is thrashing out policies and standards for 'Cloud Computing'. I've participated in some of the discourse in the groups with a bit of criticism: while the mobile industry tends to look at ICT development through their own set of blinders, so to does the IT industry. IT defines the 'cloud' and being mostly about the computer/server, databases, and program environments. They are so used to thinking about the network as of relatively little importance in leveraging of information and human assets that they take it for granted.

While I couldn't do all that much to change that, I did get a few tweaks introduced here and there in consideration of the importance of the NG RAN.

The open ecosystem from the perspective of the IT industry includes being able to access radio networks similar to other transport media: at open market costs and with user influenced conventions.
